World's highest leopard density, Asian elephants, sloth bears, and coastal wilderness

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka
Coordinates: 6.3728°N, 81.5200°E ↗
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's premier wildlife safari destination and second largest national park, spanning 979 square kilometers across the southeastern coast. Bordering the Indian Ocean, Yala combines dry-zone scrub forests, brackish lagoons, grassy plains, and dramatic granite rock outcrops. Famous globally for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, Yala offers an unparalleled African-style wildlife safari experience in Asia.
The crowning glory of a Yala 4x4 Jeep Safari is encountering the elusive Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya). Block 1 (Palatupana) boasts one of the highest concentrations of leopards anywhere on Earth. Experienced safari trackers lead visitors through dusty jungle trails toward sun-warmed granite boulders, waterholes, and high tree limbs where these majestic big cats are frequently spotted resting or stalking prey during early morning and late afternoon game drives.
Beyond big cats, Yala is a thriving sanctuary for a vast array of Asian megafauna. Large herds of Sri Lankan Elephants roam freely between freshwater tanks, while elusive Sloth Bears forage near Palu tree groves during fruit season. Mugger Crocodiles and Saltwater Crocodiles can be seen basking along lagoon banks, accompanied by herds of Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Sambar Deer, and Wild Water Buffalo. The park's diverse ecosystems also support over 215 bird species, including Malabar Pied Hornbills, Painted Storks, Crested Serpent Eagles, and seasonal migratory flocks.
Yala's unique landscape is further distinguished by its stunning coastline and rich archaeological history. Visitors can pause at the Patanangala tsunami memorial beach where golden sand dunes meet the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. Tucked deep within the wilderness lies Sithulpawwa, an ancient 2nd-century BC Buddhist rock monastery that once housed thousands of meditating monks. Combining thrill-seeking wildlife safaris, coastal beauty, and ancient heritage, Yala provides an unforgettable wilderness adventure.
