Guaranteed elephant sightings, Jeep safaris, and the Elephant Transit Home
Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka's leading wildlife reserves, celebrated primarily for its large population of wild elephants. Centred around a vast reservoir, the park offers some of the most reliable and rewarding safari experiences on the island.
The park's open grasslands and scrub jungle make it incredibly easy to spot herds of elephants grazing and roaming freely. Jeep safaris typically pass through the grasslands and along the reservoir shoreline, where visitors can watch elephants bathing, feeding, and moving between the trees. The wide, open landscape also makes wildlife spotting easier than in many denser forests.
Aside from elephants, the park is a sanctuary for water buffalo, crocodiles, macaques, sambar deer, and a myriad of vibrant birds. Water birds gather along the reservoir's edges, while raptors and colourful species such as kingfishers and bee-eaters can be seen throughout the park. Early morning and late afternoon are generally the best times for safaris, when animals are most active and the light is ideal for photography.
The Elephant Transit Home nearby provides care for orphaned elephant calves before releasing them back into the wild, and visitors can observe feeding times and learn about conservation work. Combined with the scenic reservoir and peaceful surroundings, Udawalawe offers an unforgettable wildlife experience for families, photographers, and nature lovers alike.
