Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, Mihintale, and Wilpattu Safari
Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka's first ancient capital and the grand cradle of Theravada Buddhism. Spanning vast archaeological reserves filled with towering brick stupas, sacred Bodhi groves, royal pleasure gardens, and stone-carved monasteries, this UNESCO World Heritage Sacred City served as the island's royal seat for over 1,300 years. Combining sacred pilgrimage shrines with surrounding wildlife parks and mountain sanctuaries, Anuradhapura is an essential destination for history, spirituality, and nature enthusiasts.
At the spiritual heart of Anuradhapura stands the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree planted in 288 BCE from a cutting of the historical Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. Recognized as the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a recorded history, it remains a revered sanctuary for millions of pilgrims. Surrounding this sacred tree are some of antiquity's greatest architectural wonders, including the snow-white Ruwanwelisaya Stupa built by King Dutugamunu, Thuparamaya—the island's first stupa enshrining Buddha's collarbone relic—and the colossal brick dome of Jetavanaramaya, which was once the third-tallest man-made structure in the ancient world.
The archaeological landscape of Anuradhapura extends into vast monastic complexes and rock temples rich in ancient Sri Lankan art. Abhayagiri Stupa anchors a historical monastic university complex that once housed thousands of international scholars. Nearby, Isurumuniya Rock Temple is world-renowned for its intricate 5th-century stone carvings, including the famous 'Isurumuniya Lovers' relief and elephants playing in lotus ponds. Just 12 kilometers east lies Mihintale, the sacred hilltop sanctuary where Arhat Mahinda introduced Buddhism to King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE, offering breathtaking vistas over the central plains.
Beyond its ancient monuments, the Anuradhapura region offers exceptional eco-adventures and wildlife experiences. To the west lies Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka's oldest and largest national park, famous for its unique natural sand-rimmed lakes ('villus') and thriving populations of leopards, sloth bears, and Asian elephants. Nature lovers can also explore Ritigala Kanda, a mysterious mountain forest reserve concealing ancient 1st-century BCE monastery ruins among medicinal flora, or take a short trip to Minneriya National Park to witness the famous annual elephant gathering. With its unmatched blend of sacred history, monumental architecture, and wilderness, Anuradhapura is a timeless treasure.
