Lipton's Seat, Adisham Bungalow, and panoramic mountain views
Haputale is a small hill country town in the Badulla District, dramatically perched on a ridge at high elevation. It offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Sri Lanka, rolling tea plantations, and a cool, refreshing climate.
The town is surrounded by mist-shrouded tea plantations and is famous for Lipton's Seat, the panoramic viewpoint from which Sir Thomas Lipton is said to have admired the tea estates below. From the summit, travelers can see endless green valleys, winding roads, and distant mountain ranges, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. The Dambatenne Tea Factory, one of the oldest tea factories in the country, is also nearby and offers insight into how the island's famous tea is produced.
Visitors can trek through the tea estates, visit the historic Adisham Bungalow, a grand Tudor-style mansion now home to a Benedictine monastery, or hike to the breathtaking viewpoints along the surrounding ridges. Local villages and tea pickers' communities offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who work the hillside plantations, and the scenic train journey through the highlands is one of the country's most memorable rides.
The cool climate and stunning scenery make Haputale a perfect mountain retreat. Its quiet guesthouses, misty mornings, and fresh highland air provide a peaceful escape from the coast, and the town is easy to reach by train from Ella and Bandarawela.
