For travellers interested in history, Sri Lanka offers the opportunity to walk through ancient capitals, explore centuries-old monuments, and discover how people lived, worshipped, and built remarkable cities long before modern technology.
From the ancient city of Anuradhapura to the medieval kingdom of Polonnaruwa and the cultural heritage of Kandy, here is a journey through some of Sri Lanka's most important historic kingdoms.
Location: North Central Province
Best for: Ancient monuments, Buddhism, history, and archaeology
Anuradhapura was one of the most important ancient capitals of Sri Lanka. The city developed into a major centre of political power and Buddhist civilisation, and its ruins today cover a vast area filled with stupas, monasteries, ponds, temples, and ancient structures. The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sri Maha Bodhi
One of the most important religious sites in Anuradhapura is the Sri Maha Bodhi. It is traditionally associated with a branch brought from the original Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya in India and has become an important pilgrimage site.
Ruwanwelisaya
Ruwanwelisaya is one of the most recognisable stupas in Anuradhapura. Its large white dome and surrounding elephant wall statues make it one of the most impressive monuments in the ancient city.
Abhayagiri
The Abhayagiri monastery complex was once a major centre of Buddhist learning and religious activity. Its massive stupa remains one of the defining landmarks of ancient Anuradhapura.
Ancient Irrigation
One of the most remarkable achievements of ancient Sri Lanka was its irrigation technology. Large reservoirs (wewas) and interconnected water systems helped support agriculture and urban life in the dry zone.
Location: North Central Province
Best for: Ancient ruins, temples, architecture, and cycling
After the decline of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa became the capital of Sri Lanka. Today, the ancient city is one of the country's most fascinating archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Compared with the enormous spread of Anuradhapura, many of Polonnaruwa's major monuments are located relatively close together, making it a popular destination for exploring by bicycle.
Gal Vihara
One of Polonnaruwa's most famous attractions is Gal Vihara. The site contains several impressive Buddha statues carved directly into a single granite rock face. The detailed craftsmanship demonstrates the high level of artistic skill achieved during the Polonnaruwa period.
Royal Palace & Ancient Buildings
Polonnaruwa contains the remains of royal buildings, temples, monasteries, bathing pools, and council chambers. The Royal Palace complex provides an insight into the organisation of the medieval capital.
Parakrama Samudra
One of the most impressive features of Polonnaruwa is Parakrama Samudra, a colossal ancient reservoir associated with King Parakramabahu I, reflecting the mastery of water management in ancient Ceylon.
Location: Matale District
Best for: History, architecture, hiking, and panoramic views
Although Sigiriya is not a separate kingdom in the same sense as Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Asia. The ancient rock fortress rises 200 metres dramatically above the surrounding jungle and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors climb a series of steps and pathways through the rock to reach the summit:
Location: Central Province
Best for: Culture, temples, architecture, and traditions
Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka before the kingdom came under British rule in the early 19th century. Today, the city remains one of Sri Lanka's most important cultural and spiritual destinations.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. It houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, which has played a central role in Sri Lankan kingship for millennia.
Kandy Lake
Kandy Lake sits beside the historic centre of the city and provides a scenic setting for exploring the area around the Temple of the Tooth.
